The yearly “Gear Guide” from Backpacker magazine has an honored place in our bathroom. We comb the pages, read the reviews, discuss our finds and repeat. This year’s Gear Guide edition was no different.
I had dog-eared a page marking reviews on lady’s performance underwear. I hadn’t finished examining the entire page when Phil enters the room asking why I had marked that page. He had noticed the last review of Ahnu Montara Boots on the page. He tracked down a pair at the local REI and we ran right out to get sized. Note! Order 1/2 size larger! They run a little small.
The boot tester remarked that she had sprained her ankle twice and had the same ankle issues I have been having over the past 3 years. The boot has a padded ankle section that completely encompasses the ankle and is about 1.5″ higher on the ankle than my Merrel light hikers. They are surprisingly lightweight. My ankle and foot is slim, but with a very high arch. These boots seem to be made just for my foot style.
I wore them yesterday for my daily workout at Chimney Rock. They fit like a dream. They cut down on the ankle roll overs walking on rocks and roots and uneven ground. They also minimized the shock on my decent. The soft ankle collar didn’t bind my ankle, but I felt the support and can now go without my ankle brace.
So far, I think this pair of boots will be my favorite pair ever.
