Cedar Rock Summit

  • Distance: 7.1 Miles RT
  • Elevation Gain: 1844′
  • Difficulty: Strenuous

Park in the Hatchery Parking Lot and begin the Cat Gap Loop trail hiking counter clockwise. You will walk past Picklesimer Fields. Continue on this trail bearing right toward Cat Gap at the intersection of the shortcut cut-off trail.  When you get to Cat Gap, turn sharply to the right on the Art Loeb. In about .6 mile, at Sandy Gap, there will be a trail that cuts off to the right beside a really big oak tree with a faded red blaze.

This is when the trail gets steep. You only have about .3 mile to the summit, but it is steep and a bit slick when wet. You will want to take it slowly if you value your ankles. When you get to the Geological Survey marker (directly in the middle of the trail) walk just a little further to a nice camping site. There is another little trail if you keep going straight, that cuts off to the right. It leads to a rock facing northwest with a nice look off. If you are lucky, you will get a light breeze there while you eat a snack and enjoy the view.
