Middle Prong Wilderness

We parked at the Rough Butt Bald parking lot on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Howard Gap. On the north side of the parkway, travel east on the Mountains to the Sea Trail to the intersection of Buckeye Gap Trail. Turn left onto Buckeye Gap Trail.

BRP Walk

In the winter, the park service doesn't spend the money to plow the snow and melt ice on the Blue Ridge Parkway. They close the gates to all automobile traffic. We access the parkway off Highway 276 15 miles north of Brevard at Wagon Road Gap and park at the parking lot at the top … Continue reading BRP Walk

Newfound Gap to Indian Gap

The 1.7 miles stretch of trail between Newfound Gap and Indian Gap is a gentle walk along the ridge top with views off both sides. The elevation gain isn't strenuous. I would say that this short trail section would be a beginner's trail.

Green Knob

Distance: 3 miles Elevation Gain: 816 feet Easy Hiking The Mountains to the Sea Trail crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway several times. One of those spots is just south of Wagon Road Gap. We hike this little trail when we want something quick and easy to get to. It is accessible when the parkway is … Continue reading Green Knob

Jake’s Creek

We pieced together a loop that began on Jake's Creek Trail intersecting Cucumber Gap Trail after only .7 mile. Turn left at the junction. This section of the trail is 2.4 mile with a steady increase in elevation and is moderately strenuous. Cucumber Gap trail dead ends into the Little River Trail that runs 2.4 … Continue reading Jake’s Creek

Alum Cave

My ankle has improved so much, that we decided to put it to the test by day hiking Alum Cave Trail all the way to LeConte Lodge and back. The total distance hiked was 11 miles. Total elevation gain is approximately 2560'. It gets a little steep in places. I would rate this trail … Continue reading Alum Cave

Weekend Getaway

One of our very favorite places to spend a quiet weekend is the Pisgah Inn located near milepost 405 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The rooms are old school quaint. There are no phones and no airconditioning. The tiny little bathrooms are circa 1955. The balconies overlook one of the most beautiful views from the … Continue reading Weekend Getaway

Pilot Rock

This hike, we pieced together from the Pisgah Inn Parking Lot to the bottom of Pilot Rock. Beginning along the Mountains to the Sea Trail, turn south and go over Little Bald Mountain following the trail down around Pilot Rock.

Cat Gap Loop

This morning Phil and I hiked Cat Gap Loop. Having hiked this trail many times over the years, summer, fall, winter and spring, we were amazed at how muddy it was.  I guess boggy would be a more appropriate term. The trail was so boggy in places that it was really hard to keep our … Continue reading Cat Gap Loop
