Actually, May Pops are what my dad called the Passion Flower. They come up in April and May in the wooded mountains of the Blue Ridge and Smokys. I always liked the name, May Pop. 🙂
The foliage is listed in wikipedia as a trailing vine, apparently, the vine stems in the Blue Ridge are underground. The May Pops that I am most familiar with have 5-6 lobed leaves and purple flowers.
I remember the outfield where my brothers practiced little league baseball was covered in may pops.
