Mem Day Unionjack

Memorial Day at White Sulphur Springs, MT

White Sulphur Springs, Montana is a small town with a  population of approximately 960 people as of 2012. The town’s well tended cemetery is located just a block from Main Street. We were in town over the Memorial Day weekend and were humbled by what we saw there.

Several hundred flag topped crosses lined the entrance and the outside of the cemetery. Each cross bore the name of a local soldier, sailor, airman, or marine that had been lost to war.  One of the crosses was topped by the Union Jack flag as that serviceperson was actually a British citizen. There were hundreds … I would estimate over 300.

The significance that this tiny little town had lost such a large ratio of their entire population was not lost on us. And, they haven’t forgotten.
